They worked in collaboration with the United States Navy, and all the flight scenes you see in both movies are pretty darn realistic. But the most demanding part of being a TOPGUN instructor for me wasn't the actual flying, like you see in "Top Gun" and "Top Gun: Maverick," but the lecture process as an instructor. You're flying every single day, Monday through Friday, and in many cases, twice a day. Depending on how dynamic your mission is — meaning how aggressive and fast you're flying — you'll likely be airborne for about an hour, doing basic flight maneuvers and the dogfighting you see in the "Top Gun" movies. As an instructor, you're having a real direct influence and ability there.

Eisenhower isn't exactly the best, but for Capt. AdvertisementThe efforts to keep morale up come as the Dwight D. Eisenhower carrier strike group confronts a variety of threats, including some no one has ever faced in combat before, in a kinetic weapons-engagement environment. Captaining a flagship carrier in this situation is no easy task, but Hill has a lot of Navy experience to lean on. Among other things, he has served as the executive and commanding officer of an airborne command & control squadron, a TOPGUN instructor, the executive officer of the aircraft carrier George H.W.

Read previewUkraine's attack helicopter pilots are flying low and fast, navigating a dangerous battlefield where almost anything in the air is at risk. Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopters attack Russian positions with the use of unguided rockets. And then, of course, there is the serious threat of Russian surface-to-air missiles and other weapons, to include Russian aircraft. AdvertisementThe General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine showed footage of the combat operation of the Mi-24 attack helicopter. Part of the larger problem facing Ukrainian helicopter pilots is identifying where threats are coming from in combat environments.

Flying low isn't necessarily more difficult, but it does require certain skills, according to Snodgrass. AdvertisementAs for the MiG in the Ukrainian air force video, it doesn't get much lower than that.

US officials released a video of a Chinese fighter jet intercepting a US aircraft over the South China Sea. A former American aviator told Insider the incident highlights how Chinese pilots are "willing to challenge" the US in the area. "What we're witnessing is an increasingly competent and better trained Chinese flying cadre" that is "willing to challenge the US and allied flights occurring near the PRC air defense identification zone," retired Cmdr. The US says it documented more than 180 coercive or risky intercepts by Chinese aircraft since fall 2021. He was deployed in Iraq and Syria in 2016 aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. Tortorich now trains pilots of Strike Fighter Squadron 105, also known as the "Gunslingers." As a professional fighter pilot, you should keep up with what's going on every day, even when you're not flying. In the Navy, you're usually in a specific job for only two to three years. AdvertisementAdvertisementOverall, being a fighter pilot and then a trainer of fighter pilots has been a tough but extremely worthwhile career.

Russian pilots who intercepted and harassed a US drone last week were presented with awards. When asked at a briefing about the awards, a top White House official ripped into the pilots. "I don't know of another military in the world — another air force in the world — that would award a pilot for smashing into a drone," Kirby said. But State Department spokesperson Ned Price last week also said that the incident was indicative of "a lack of competence." He added that "we've known they were unprofessional," but the incident really "demonstrates how poorly trained" their pilots are.
A Russian fighter jet clipped a US military drone operating above the Black Sea last week. US officials say drones are flying farther south and away from Russia, according to a report. US officials, however, told CNN that the drones are now flying farther south over the Black Sea and moving away from Russia and occupied Crimea. A Russian Su-27 fighter jet approaches a US military MQ-9 Reaper drone operating above the Black Sea on March 14, 2023. "We are the adults in the room when it comes to international military forces," the former defense official continued.
A Russian fighter jet harassed a US military MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Black Sea this week. But US officials said the fighter pilot demonstrated a "lack of competence" by clipping the drone. On Tuesday, two Russian Su-27 fighter jets intercepted a US military MQ-9 Reaper drone that was flying in international airspace above the Black Sea. A composite image showing the rear of a US MQ-9 Reaper drone before and after the US military says a Russian Su-27 fighter jet collided with it. The report consists of empirical research completed in 2020 that analyzes years of Russian military activity like intercepts and other engagements.
A Russian fighter jet collided with an American drone this week after harassing it. The collision was likely unintentional, and former US naval aviators say that it could point to problems with Russian fighter pilots. A State Department official said it "probably was the result of profound incompetence on the part of one of these Russian pilots." Russian military failures in Ukraine have altered this view, he continued, "and now, you've got something like this." Charles Larkin Sr./US Air Force via AP"The tactical portion here is that poor training or poor decision making by a Russian pilot caused a collision," Snodgrass said.
An outgunned US Navy pilot downed four Soviet MiG-15 jets in a legendary dogfight over 70 years ago. This swept-wing Soviet aircraft was considered to be superior to the straight-wing American Panther in terms of overall performance. A Grumman F9F Panther fighter jet fires its guns during an attack on the North Korean port of Hungnam. "In the moment I was a fighter pilot doing my job," Williams said in an account of the fight, according to Pacific Fleet. Williams' dogfight isn't the only example of US planes battling enemy aircraft that are superior on paper.

However, USS New Jersey was brought back into active service once before. US ArmyAn evolution of the famed M1 Garand of WWII and Korea, the M14 battle rifle became the standard-issue rifle for the US military in 1959. It served as the basis of the M21 Sniper Weapon System introduced in 1968 and M25 Sniper Weapon System introduced in 1991. Though both weapon systems have been largely replaced by the M24 Sniper Weapon System, the M14 lives on as the Mk14 Enhanced Battle Rifle.
